So tumblr has been having this meme where people list a 100 or so films and people select how many they've seen. Mine is here. I only got to 92 but then remembered more after I'd published the list.

comments

Two things and Yellowjackets grumblings

1. Decide to organize my AO3 bookmarks to put together some recs.

2. Listening to Franz Ferdinand's new album has got me back into noughties indie. I couldn't find a playlist that had all the bands/songs I wanted so I made my own. It's nearly 7 hours long and that's with me being selective with the songs.

( spoilers for yellowjackets s3 ep4 )

comments

I can't believe Disney/Marvel are still trying to make the Fantastic Four happen. I'd seen the Pedro Pascal, Stranger Things guy etc casting but I honestly thought it was just a fancast that got really popular. But apparently it's an actual film. I suppose they've run out of new recognizable superheroes they have to go back over old ground (see also DCCU and yet another Superman film).

comments

Some fandom goals + a book

I've seen a lot of people's posts about their fandom goals and I was in the process of making one, however I've decided against setting out any long list that I'll probably struggle to complete and then feel bad about afterwards. So, 3 things I would like to achieve this year:

1. Finish the fanfic I am currently working on
2. Watch more films than last year (73).
3. Make an attempt to read all of these books.

I've already made a start on the book list and finished Mexican Gothic recently.

( spoilery thoughts below )

comments

Horror films watched - the sequels

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985) - This follows Jesse Walsh, a teenager who begins having recurring nightmares about Freddy Krueger after moving into the former home of Nancy Thompson from the first film. Had very low expectations for this but it ended up being quite watchable, mainly due to the gay subtext. There's a part in the middle of the film where Jesse goes out walking at night to avoid dreaming of Freddy and ends up in a gay bar where he comes across his gym teacher. The gym teacher makes Jesse run laps at the school until Freddy shows up and kills the teacher, which involves stripping him naked and whipping him with a towel. I am not making any of this up. There is also a scene where Jesse kisses the girl who's interested in him and then runs away to his male friend's house. The thing that makes the Elm Street films scary is that you’re not safe even when you go to sleep and, as the with the child abuse subtext in the first film, this plays into that fear. What if you can’t control yourself? What if you feel that secretly you are a monster? Even when it seems like the power of heterosexual love wins out the ending pulls the rug from underneath you.

Scream 2 (1997) - Sydney and the other survivors from the first film deal with a copycat ghostface killer at college. Along with the original cast there are plenty of young 90s stars – Sarah Michelle Gellar (who gets killed with a vampire film playing in the background), Jerry O’Connell, Joshua Jackson, Jada Pinkett and a young Timothy Olyphant. Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson also return to direct and write respectively, which helps maintain the quality from the first film. There’s more meta commentary – the great opening sequence with characters watching a film of the events from the first film, a discussion about which sequels were better than the originals (SMG’s character is absolutely correct that Aliens is not better than Alien) and Randy giving us the ‘rules’ of the sequel. As I said about the first film, its strength is that everything with Sydney is played completely straight and the violence remains generally scary rather than silly. Whilst I don't think this is quite as good as the first film I still really enjoyed it.

Halloween II (1981) - This picks up straight up from the events at the end of the first film - Dr Loomis saved Laurie and shot Michael who then disappeared. The first half hour was actually pretty solid. I liked seeing the immediate aftermath of the first film, something that rarely seems to happen in sequels, particularly the part where the sheriff, one of the few prominent adult characters, finds out that his daughter was killed. The scenes with Michael lurking around while evading the police were well shot and generally on par with anything from the first film. Where the film falters is when Laurie is out of action in the hospital so we're left with Michael sneaking around killing random hospital staff who I don't really care about with occasional moments of Dr Loomis being the most dramatic man in a horror franchise (which to be fair is quite entertaining). It picks up towards the end when Laurie wakes up and we get the big reveal that she is Michael's sister, which turns out to be a bit of a damp squib given that we never see her actually find this out and react to it, and honestly it felt thrown in there to justify Michael continuing to go after her.

Friday the 13th Part II (1981) - A bunch of teenagers do camp counselor training and are picked off one by one, this time by Jason (still with no hockey mask) carrying on his mother's work. I watched this straight after Halloween II and it was funny to notice that they both open with showing the events at the end of the previous film. I had the same reaction to this as I did the first film in that I was mostly bored. The problem I'm finding with the Friday the 13th franchise so far is that there are no real memorable characters. Scream has Sidney, Elm Street has Nancy, Halloween has Laurie. I struggle to remember the names of any of the teens in either Friday the 13th. To be fair the final girl in this one did show some personality and resourcefulness but was not given enough screentime. Likewise the killer is also not that interesting. Freddy and the various Ghostfaces have banter, Michael has the ability to randomly appear and scare the shit out of me. Jason just kind of lumbers around.

My rankings of the sequels:

1. Scream 2 - not a coincidence that this is the only sequel with the same writer and director as the first film and it's the strongest one out of the bunch
2. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 - the gay subtext made this more interesting than it would have been otherwise
3. Halloween 2 - decent opening, solid direction but a wafer thin plot
4. Friday the 13th part 2 - I'm just still not really getting the appeal of this franchise so far.

comments

Started watching Ripley on Netflix. Visually it is very beautiful, all shot in black and white. I like Andrew Scott's performance even if he is too old for Tom. I'm less sure about the casting for Dickie - I've liked Johnny Flynn in other things but he is coming across as bland and uncharismatic so far. I found Jude Law's take on the character in the 1999 film a lot better as you could believe that he was someone that drew people in even if he did act like an ass.

Speaking of miscasting, I'm not an Emerald Fennell hater per se, but what the hell was she thinking casting Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie as Heathcliff and Cathy??

comments

Horror films watched

Friday the 13th (1980) - I thought I had seen this film a long time ago, turns out it was actually the 2000s remake, so I decided to watch the original. The opening is pretty atmospheric with a flashback to Camp Crystal Lake in the 50s and then when one of the teenagers arrives in the nearby town to start work at the camp. After that it's just a bunch of indistinguishable teenagers being picked off one by one with very little tension. One of them was young Kevin Bacon. I genuinely couldn't tell you any of their names or describe any personality traits they had. I had also completely forgotten that the killer was not a big guy in a hockey mask but a middle aged women in a cable knit sweater. When Pamela finally revealed herself the film got a lot more entertaining, it's a shame this only happened in the last 20 minutes. For a film that spawned one of the big horror franchises I was expecting a little more from it.

Scream (1996) - A rewatch of a film that I hadn't seen in a long time and enjoyed revisiting. A couple of things struck me this time around. One was that despite the humour and the meta narrative the film always took what was going on with Sydney very seriously. Another was that Billy and Stu really were a pathetic pair of misogynists - Billy calling Sydney's mother a whore while spending most of the film whinging about Sydney not wanting to have sex with him, seriously even if he hadn't been the killer he still would have been a total dick (between this and the Craft, 1996 really was the year for Skeet Ulrich playing awful male characters) and the other victims being Stu's girlfriend, Stu's ex girlfriend and the guy she dumped him for. Overall I thought this held up really well.

comments

Twin Peaks: Love's a game (wanna play?)
Donna/Ben, mature, 4,249 words.
Besides any potential shared blood, Laura is really the only thread that connects them.
A meme I've seen around on various accounts:

🎶Last song listened to: Angel by First Aid Kit. Big fan of this band and this in particular has some beautiful harmonies. Also Good Luck Babe by Chappell Roan who is all over tumblr at the moment and I was sure I hadn't heard any of her songs but then realised that this one had been played on a fairly regular basis on the radio, I just never knew who was singing.

📺Currently reading/playing/watching: Reading - just finished A Game of Thrones. It's been about a decade since I first read the books and House of the Dragon has put me back in the mood to read them again. Watching - as mentioned House of the Dragon season 2 (hit and miss but expected because of the writer's strike) and Interview With the Vampire season 2 (loving this so far).

🌶️Sweet/savory/spicy?:Savory. I like spicy and sweet but I have to be in the mood for them.

🤩Current obsession: Rereading A Game of Thrones has pulled me back into the Song of Ice and Fire universe. I'm even considering rewatching Game of Thrones. Maybe. Maybe the early seasons at least.

comments

Random tv thoughts

1. Currently rewatching Elementary and I think that it's a reverse of the old Star Trek films where in this case the odd numbered seasons are stronger. Although even in the weaker seasons, while some episodes work better than others, I don't think there any outright stinkers. There have been some storylines that I haven't been particularly fond of - Joan/Mycroft, the decision to give Moriarty a child, I'm on season 6 right now and am not sure about the Joan wanting to have kids plot (although I did like the episode where she inspired the woman whose baby she was potentially going to adopt to live a more unconventional life) - but for a show that lasted 7 seasons it managed to be quite consistent in terms of quality.

2. I think season 2 of Supernatural is probably my favourite. It added more regular supporting characters (I imagine, as with any female character, they weren't popular at the time but I really liked Ellen and Jo), the humour works and hasn't got too meta yet, a lot of work is put into setting up the events in the finale and from about episode 7 onward it just has a great run of episodes.

comments

You're always better off with a good lie - Pretty Little Liars rewatch, s1 eps 1-11

- This show started in 2010 and feels in some ways very of its time - mobile phones are widely in use but social media doesn't appear to have much of a presence yet (Hanna doesn't even know about selling things online.) You can only imagine how inescapable A would have been with the likes of Facebook, Instagram etc.
- The writers struggle to get the balance between the mystery and the teen soap aspects however it seems to come together around episode 9.
- One thing that is done really well is how quickly they establish the isolation of the girls. The police are openly hostile, the school staff indifferent (when they're not trying to date them), their parents aren't approachable for a variety of reasons.
- Speaking of Aria/Ezra - I feel I am going to have a lot to say about them as I keep watching - and my god do I dislike Ezra even more this time around. Every time he tells Aria that she should move on he actively prevents her from doing so. That being said, at this point in the series I think the relationship makes a lot of sense from Aria's side. At this particular moment she isn't that close with the other girls and due to being away for a year she's lost the chance at any other potential established friendship groups, so it makes sense that she would become dependent on Ezra as someone to talk to about her parents' issues.
- There's a lot of low key disturbing stuff happening - Wilden's thing with Ashley and his harassment of the girls (a rare win by Spencer's mother for pulling him up on questioning them without an adult present) and the way Melissa's boyfriends keep preying on Spencer which everyone in her family blames her for.
- This show does have some great antagonists like Jenna and my favourite creep Ian has just made an appearance.
- Mona has appeared really sparingly so far
- Ashley Marin is hot and a total mess - she's my favourite out of all of the parents.
- Funny to see Toby being talked about/initially portrayed as threatening when he seems to have all the menace of a wet cat.
- So many boring boys that I'd forgotten existed - Sean, Alex and Emily's early episodes boyfriend who is Coach Ben in Yellowjackets.
- Maya is a bit too Ideal Gay Love Interest at the moment, I like her better when she gets more of a personality which is of course when she gets written off. I do think it is interesting the way she is the total opposite of Alison though.
- Another thing I had totally forgotten about was that Jason was recast. The first guy comes across as a serious business type with his suits whereas the next actor was more of a floppy haired stoner.

comments

FemFebruary - Lambert, Alien

senmut asked Alien, Lambert, what are your thoughts on her role?

To be honest my main impression of Lambert from what I could recall was her being weepy and a bit useless, especially in comparison to Ripley. So when I watched Alien again tonight I paid particular attention to her and I have to say that that impression was harsh and not entirely correct. Lambert is shown to be emotional, however given the situation it's understandable and she's not the only crew member to be so either. She takes part in every task along with the other crew members and she's the one who short circuits Ash when he's attacking Parker. The only time she probably is weepy and useless is just before she dies a horrible death so I can't really hold that against her.

My favourite moment involving her is when told to 'quit griping' she responds with 'I like griping.' Me too Lambert, me too.

comments

FemFebruary - Kisa, From Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn, Kisa, thoughts on her relationships? asked byqueenslayerbee

It's been a long time since I watched FDTD so my memory is a little rusty on some of the details but these are the Kisa relationships that I found most interesting:

Kisa/Carlos - Their queen/loyal henchman dynamic they had going on early in the series and then the 'enemies forced to become allies' thing in season 3 suckered me in. They also had some very visually beautiful scenes throughout the show that appealed to my sensibilities - the flashbacks with Carlos on his knees in front of Kisa and when he kills his men for her, when she literally stitches him back together. I never found the writing for Carlos all that consistent however the one through line throughout the series with him and Kisa that he worshiped her as a goddess which she was never comfortable with always stood out as a unique source of conflict between 2 characters.

Kisa/women - I always wanted more interaction between Kisa and other female characters. The stuff with Paloma in s2 was great, I would have liked more of her girlfriend in s3 who largely seemed to exist to die, but my main wish was always for more Kisa/Kate. They were the main 2 female characters and it frustrates me no end that they never really got many scenes together. Kate's s3 possession storyline was not well written but it at least set up some common ground between her and Kisa...which the writers then did nothing with...

Anyway going to throw in a Kisa/Kate fic rec, it's a Kate centric season 1 AU:

it's the weight of her by theirwolf
Rated T, 4,153 words
Something about Mexico doesn't sit right. The moment her dad tells her that's where they're going - 'But where in Mexico?' she pushes; 'Wherever the Lord leads us,' is all she gets - her insides twist and writhe, as if her belly was full of snakes.

Santanico calls to Kate, too.

comments

Female character February

I had every intention of doing the Snowflake Challenge this year, however it does not seem to have been meant to be. I do want to try and post more regularly though and senmut is doing an AMA about female characters for February (their post is here) which I think is a great idea so I'm going to try and do something similar. So, if you give me a canon, a female character and if you want to, a specific topic/question and I will do my best to make a post about them, or if I have time, create a fanwork. My pinned about post has a list of the various medias that I like if you're looking for ideas.

comments

In an attempt to get back into posting on here more regularly I decided to give the Snowflake Challenge a go.

Update your fandom information. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I updated my sticky welcome post here.
Films/TV in 2023

What TV shows did you watch a season of this year?
Interview with the Vampire (S1), Yellowjackets (S2), Succession (S4), Lupin (S3), Ghosts (S5) & The Lincoln Lawyer (S1&2). Also rewatched Supernatural (S1-5), Wanted (S1-3) and Elementary (S1&2).

What TV shows did you DNF this year?
Outer Range, a sci-fi show about a family living on a ranch who discover a portal on their land. Sounded much more interesting than it actually was. There were also a couple of things I was rewatching that for various reasons I ended not finishing.

How many movies did you watch this year? Any trends in genre/viewing format/etc?
67- 42 new, 25 rewatches. Main trend seems to be that very few were made in the 2020s.

What are your top movies you watched this year?
Lake Mungo (2008)
Candyman (1992)
Lust Caution (2007)
The Innocents (1961)
The Company of Wolves (1984)

What's a movie you enjoyed more than you expected?
I'm not sure I'd use the word 'enjoyed' but I liked Marnie a lot more than I thought I would, given that I'd heard very mixed things about it.

Which movies most disappointed you this year?
Del Toro's Nightmare Alley was extremely dull and sterile which was not what I would have expected from him. The 2021 Candyman was a mess and not a patch on the 90s film.

Movies that you had the most fun talking about, whether they were good or bad
Took a dip into the Halloween franchise in October and had some good conversations around the various films.

Did you rewatch any old faves? If so, which one was you favourite?
Rewatched several Hitchcock films and film noirs. Absolute favourites - Shadow of a Doubt and This Gun For Hire.

What's the oldest movie you watched?
Scarface (1932)

What's the newest movie you watched?
Saltburn (2023)

Did you watch any movies outside of your usual preferred genre(s)?
I suppose the Muppet Christmas Carol counts as I don't usually like the traditional Christmas films :D (Batman Returns is more my idea of a Christmas film.)

Any movies you're excited to watch in 2024?
I'm very out of the loop on what's being released next year, I get most of my recommendations from tumblr gifsets.

comments

Feel a bit silly posting this when I've barely been active on here, but honestly I've not had a great year and could use some positivity.

✨ holiday love meme 2023 ✨
my thread here

comments
